The management of Ghana Telecom in Ghana for more than 5 years (Y2003-Y2009), employing 35 international expats and about 4,500 locals. Ghana Telecom was mismanaged over many years with frustrations in all levels in the organization. TMP was involved in the development of a business plan that gave a directive of the way forward. This led to the following achievement:
Negotiated a refunding program with international financial institutions that were used to:
- Roll out of the Mobile Network and started extracting new customers from competitor's customer base.
- Expanding the data network.
- Reorganizing the organization in business sectors with cost and result responsibilities.
- Cost reduction programs which were quite successful even if this was difficult as layoffs of staff was not popular in a state-owned entity.
- Upgraded “Ghana Telecom School” to a level which made it approved as a university and it still acts an independent University with high reputation.
These actions increased the attractiveness of the company, and, the government decided to sell the company which was eventually made and facilitated by TMP to Vodacom. This generated significant capital gain for the government and Vodacom took over the management ever since. After several years, the company was sold to AirtelTigo.
Provision of consultation study to support the first mobile operator in Libya (Al Madar Al Jadid) to develop mobile strategy which will enable Libya to be an attractive investment area for international telecom players.
TMP acquired the mobile license in Namibia and formed PowerCom (Pty) Ltd. The company was financed with the help of Nor fund and Finn fund, the Norwegian’s and Finland’s state-owned funds for developing countries. Together with Together with local partners and developed this company as the second GSM player in the Namibian market. The company was successfully sold.
